Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16 (SSAE 16) superseded Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 (“SAS 70”) on June 15th, 2011. Since that date, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants has introduced the Service Organization Control (SOC) reporting framework to help companies understand their reporting options. SSAE 16 examinations are referred to as “SOC 1” examinations within this framework. SOC 2 examinations report on controls related to compliance with one or more Trust Services Principles (i.e., security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy). SOC 3 examinations are SysTrust examinations performed specifically for service organizations.
